On the 23rd of July, we as a group of learners from Ferdinand Postma High School took part in a one-day outreach that truly touched our hearts. As the sun began to set and the winter chill set in, we gathered to distribute warm soup, fresh bread and blankets to people living on the streets and others who are struggling.
We had spent days preparing for this moment. Donations of bread and blankets were collected from learners, teachers and parents while the soup was made with care earlier in the day. When everything was packed and ready, we headed out just before sunset to areas where we knew help was needed most.
The streets were cold and quiet but as we approached with our care packages, we were met with tired yet hopeful faces. Handing out each cup of soup or blanket was a reminder that even small acts of kindness can bring warmth — not just to the body but to the heart.
The entire outreach lasted only one evening, but in that short time, we were able to connect with people who are often forgotten. We didn’t just give them food or blankets; we gave them a moment of care and dignity.
As we packed up and returned home, we all felt changed. That one evening showed us how powerful compassion can be. It reminded us that making a difference doesn’t require grand gestures — sometimes, it’s just about showing up and caring, even for one night.
