Pi Day, celebrated on the 14th of March is a day all about maths or for some, like at our school, a day about food and fun.
For those of you who don't know, Pi Day is the annual celebration of the mathematical constant "pi". It is observed on the 14th of March, as this date written mathematically is 3/14 which is also significantly the first 3 digits of Pi (3.14...). This day is also Albert Einstein's birthday, as well as our very own Mr Odendaal's (a Math and Physics teacher at our school), which is quite ironic if you ask me.
This year, the Academic Committee took Pi Day to the next level at Ferdies with the following events:
Pie-a-Teacher
During break, everyone had a blast, including the teachers. Watching five of their fellow colleagues getting "pied" in the face by learners.
Pie-Eating Competition
Besides from being able to pie a teacher, you could also enter for the pie eating competition, where you were expected to be the first to eat 2 pies and drink an entire Coke in order to win. Our headboy, Armand Potgieter, won this with ease.
Pi-Digits Recitation
If you're a person who remembers things easily, this challenge was for you. Learners who entered had to memorize and recite as many digits of Pi as they could. The winner of this was Imaan Sooliman in Grade 8.
Pie-Food for Sale
You could've also pre-ordered Pizza-Pies or bought a bucket of Popcorn on the day.
On the behalf of Ferdies, we thank Deané and her committee for all their hard work put into making this day the enjoyable and memorable day that it was for our school.
